Founded in 1989, the Central Maryland Heritage League is a nonprofit organization created to promote the cultural, historical, and natural heritage of the Middletown Valley. C MHL advocates, encourages, and enhances public awareness of this heritage through the conservation, interpretation, preservation and stewardship of the resources contributing to the South Mountain State Battlefield and its surrounds — including Wise's Field, historic Dahlgren Chapel, and the Dahlgren family involvement in the events relating to the Civil War in Maryland.
While the South Mountain State Battlefield is one of our prime initiatives, we have acquired Dahlgren Chapel, the private family chapel of Madeleine Vinton Dahlgren, built in 1881 atop South Mountain. We are the stewards of Dr. Austin A. Lamar's Surgical Suite and Medical Museum, located in downtown historical Middletown, Maryland. We also hold easements on several properties.

The farms, forests, streams, Civil War sites and heritage of The Middletown Valley and Catoctin Watershed are critically important and under constant pressure to be developed. Our mission is to preserve them before before it's too late.
We also are working to create a trail system across and down the Middletown Valley to connect the Appalachian and Catoctin Trails, with the towns of Middletown, Myersville, Burkittsville and Brunswick to provide safe and healthy outdoor places for residents and visitors alike to experience our rich agriculture heritage and civil war history.

There are ten Sierra Club Groups in Maryland. The Sierra Club Catoctin Group encompasses Carroll and Frederick Counties. The Catoctin Group offers many opportunities for citizens to engage in outings, environmental issues and projects. There is literally a niche for anyone who loves the outdoors and wants to protect its myriad resources. The geography and 1,100 square miles of these two counties offers enumerable choices to explore, enjoy and protect nature. A monthly member meeting, open to the public, is usually held first Saturday mornings at 10 AM. Learn more at the Catoctin Group webpage.
