In 2022, Catoctin Land Trust purchased a small parcel on Bear Creek in Garrett County to protect critical habitat just upstream from a fish hatchery. The property borders Savage River State Forest on two sides. The small cluster of properties nearby is completely surrounded by state forest. The trout stream was threatened by development of resort cabins which would damage the riparian area. With help from Chesapeake Power Foundation and technical assistance from Maryland DNR, CLT was able to buy and hold the property while we developed perpetual conservation plans.
We’re thrilled to report that soon the property will become part of the state forest, protecting the stream and its fish populations. As a fishing spot, it will be public but remain a remote hideaway accessible by anglers who venture into the forest on foot.
